Frequently Asked Questions
Breo Ellipta (fluticasone furoate 100 mcg and vilanterol 25 mcg inhalation powder) is a medication used to treat asthma and COPD. Currently, there is no generic medication for Breo Ellipta. One dose helps to improve breathing for a full 24 hour period. This medication is approved for adults ages 18 and over. It is for people who need both an ICS (inhaled corticosteroid) and a LABA ( long-acting beta2 adrenergic agonist). Breo is not for people whose asthma is well controlled on Asthma controlled medicine, such as an ICS. Breo is not approved for children.
Breo Ellipta has been proven effective in treating Asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. Breo should not be used for sudden breathing problems and does not replace a rescue inhaler.
Trelegy is an alternative to Breo. It is also FDA approved to treat asthma and COPD in adults. When comparing Trelegy to Breo, Trelegy is more effective in reducing the number of flare-ups in patients than Breo. Trelegy contains 3 long-acting medicines: fluticasone furoate (an inhaled corticosteroid [ICS]), umeclidinium (a long-acting muscarinic antagonist [LAMA] also known as an anticholinergic), and vilanterol (a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist [LABA]). Trelegy has an extra medicine that is long-lasting which is why it is more effective in reducing flare-ups. Similar to Breo, it should not be used to treat sudden breathing problems and cannot replace rescue inhalers.
People can expect to pay between $250 to 531 for a month’s supply of Breo. This medication comes in the form of 60 blisters of 100 mcg/25 mcg Inhaler. Many people would have difficulty paying this amount monthly. People who can benefit from taking Breo should be able to purchase this medication at a more affordable price. Their quality of life is dependent on this medication. Price should never be the reason that people do not take medication that can help them enjoy their life.
Breo coupons do save people some money, however; they do not save people enough money. Many people search the Internet for Breo coupons when their doctor prescribes them this medicine because it is very expensive. People find out quickly that coupons do not really save them the money that they really need to be saved.
People using Breo coupons still pay hundreds of dollars for prescription medications out of pocket each month. For example, as of January 2021 a person who uses a Walmart Coupon for Breo will still pay as much as $304.74. By using The Rx Advocate program people will never pay more than $60-$90 per month for medication. This is why so many people come to us for assistance in obtaining their medication. We are more cost-effective than coupons.
There are other names for Prescription drug coupons such as, copay cards, copay coupons, copay assistance programs, and pharmacy coupons.
These coupons represent a program funded by the pharmaceutical company. They help to lower the cost of people’s out of pocket expenses for medication. However, these coupons have their limitations such as the following:
- Coupons are for a limited time only. They usually expire so the savings are not continuous. They may help to get people started on their medications but their savings do not continue from month to month.
- Some coupons only cover the first prescription; not the refills for each month.
- Patients will need to go to the store to present their coupon and pick up their medication.
A prescription discount card is a card that helps people to pay lower costs for their medications. These discount cards are most beneficial to people who have to pay cash for their medications. These prescription discount cards do not cost any money and they are available to people with and without health insurance.
There are various savings programs that agree on a lower price on drugs like Breo. Prescription Discount Cards help people to purchase their medications at lower prices.
Copay assistance programs or copay coupons help people who have health insurance to pay the copay for their prescription medication. Sometimes copays can still be very expensive. These copay coupons can be very helpful to people. These programs are not for people who do not have health insurance.
Brand-name medications offer copay assistance programs and/or coupons as a way to encourage providers and patients to choose them over the generic version of the medications. Here is an example of how this works.
A patient may have a choice between a $1,200 brand-name medication or a $100 generic medication. Their insurance plan’s copay would be $20 no matter which one they choose. People with a copay assistance program helps the pharmaceutical company make a lot more money on the brand name drug. The copay assistance program has made it more appealing to the patient by covering their copay. Their insurance company still has to pay the remaining $1,180 for the drug.
